Trial Update

I have so many things to talk about but very little that I am legally able to discuss.

For those of you who don’t remember or that haven’t been reading here long enough, I have a Political Science degree. My original plans were to become a lawyer. A whole bunch of other stuff like kids, marriage, call it what you want, happened somewhere in-between and I somehow ended up in engineering.

Man did I screw up. For jury duty we show up at 9:00 AM, get several breaks during the day, one and a half to two hour lunches and today we left at 4:30. This schedule was made for me!

On the other hand, we have to deal with some pretty serious topics, lots of pictures, and testimony from a myriad of sources. It’s pretty cool in a civic duty sort of way but I can see already that this is going to weigh very heavily on me.

Here is a link to a news story about the trial. No, I didn’t read it. Why believe me? Because honesty is what got my dumb ass on this trial in the first place, if you think I learned my lesson, no I didn’t. I’m still way too fair and impartial.

I have never done jury duty, so I can only imagine what it must be like. Good luck with it. It does sound like quite an interesting case.

Oh my goodness, you got the murder trial. Don't really know what to say - 'I hope it goes well for you' doesn't seem appropriate.
Jury service isn't an easy thing to do, when we're often told it's not right to 'judge' people, and that's basically the position you're now in. But is that really the case I wonder, having now typed those words ... no, it's not really, because you're decision is (or should be) based on the facts, the evidence (at least that's what we were directed, as a jury, to do) rather than the person.
I guess that's why some jurys' decisions are seen as 'unjust', and is to do with the difference between justice and the law.

babe, the missing interview thing sux, but I hope everything else goes ok
My heart really goes out to you though, whatever the deal with the trial and however the decision goes, I'm guessing you'll see and hear some pretty nasty shit.
*kisses*
*hugs*

After reading this news story link, all I can say is thank god this isnt the case I got.

Its amazing how even the simplest of cases become so complex. The one day trial I was one was a criminal one for sexual penetration. During the question period (whatever the official term is for that) they asked if anyone would have a problem convicting a person without DNA evidence, sounded like a stupid question at the time but after the trial got underway, every juror knew why they asked that. It was a big ol case of he said she said....with more witness he saying and she saying... they call that Hearsay, but apparently when worded and debated right its proper courtroom material.

Murder: heavy stuff. I'm sure you will be fair throughout the process though.

As a former Paralegal, I have to say that I enjoyed the trial process of the case. However, the rest of the stuff you guys don't see, was a pain in the ass (i.e. the paperwork, case research, witness prep., etc.). Why you ask? Because we paralegals did all the work, while the attorneys took all the credit. So yeah, being a lawyer was a job you missed out on, but your paralegal would be hating you. ;) Here's hoping they wrap up the case sooner than later. And trust me, it could happen.

Good luck on the soon to come interview.

Be very very careful... I know I trust you implicitly but any sort of ANYTHING could really blow the whole trial...even down the road...I know of a murder case where jurors said something after the conviction about something on a talk radio show and it BLEW everything...just looking out for you ... I also thank you for your service...thank you... I now have a bit more faith in the "system" than I did before

Ugh. Just read about the case. I'd like to be on a jury, but don't know if I could handle a murder case. Keep us posted, as much as you can.
